Like the other two former Soviet Republics on the Baltic Sea (Lithuania and Estonia) much of the interior of the country is covered in marshes and swamps, a function of their position on the northern edge of the great East European Plain. These provide not only some of Europe's most important bird sanctuaries but also scenes of intense natural beauty.
