Situated in the Alblasserwaard polder (the Dutch term for a low-lying tract of land) in the province of South Holland, Kinderdijk is known primarily for its large concentration of old fashioned windmills, which were not invented by the Dutch but which represented localized perfection of an older design. The particular windmills here were built in the mid-18th century in order to drain the surrounding land.
