The plain is the heart of Alsace, a historical region which lies between the Vosges Mountains to the west and the Rhine River (also the border with Germany) to the east. Along with its sister region Lorraine (which lies to its west) Alsace was ceded to Germany following France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1871 then retaken by France following Germany's defeat in World War I.
