AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE : Check out this drone video of an important mountain fortification in western Austria, compliments of AirVuz contributor #OBENDROHNE. It's called Vilsegg Castle, and it's located in the state of Tyrol, less than a mile/km from the present-day Austrian-German border. Built only 60 meters (about 200 ft.) above the Vils Valley, the position of the fortress was difficult to attack due to the steepness of the hill on which it sits. Originally dating to the early 13th century, the fortress fell into a ruined state by the late 18th century.

Directly above the mouth of the Lechbach in the Vils, Vilsegg Castle towers on steep rocks. It was found around 1220 and decayed from the 18th century. Due to a feeling in 1939 it was severely affected, Bergfried completely heard the courtyard facade with the high entrance. Vilsegg Castle is still the castle complex with the influence of the Hohenstaufen architecture in Tyrol. Corner cuboids and elements elements from the time can be recognized. The compact structure of the castle itself according to the topography and man standing on top of a keep with a courtyard in front and an underlying palace, surrounded by a polygonal ring wall. Access to the castle is via a path that circles the castle. It calls through two gates and is filled by positions advertised by the compact core castle. Thus, Vilsegg Castle was easily heard even with a small team. Today the beautiful ruin with the new remains invites you to a personal visit. The tourists get lost slowly on the gem and the wonderful view invites you to linger.
