Picturesque and to be discovered is Ostuni, the white city. Renowned tourist destination Ostuni boasts a wonderful medieval village, full of narrow streets and whitewashed rooms with calm in a maze reminiscent of an Arab casbah. A walk in the old city, called the "land" to distinguish it from the more recent "marina", offers picturesque views of alleys, steep stairways, courtyards and small squares overlooked by white houses embellished with geraniums, artisan shops, typical restaurants and shops. Perched on three hills, Ostuni rises in the Itria Valley at 218 m above sea level. The magic of Ostuni, the White City, is linked to the characteristic coloring with lime paint of the ancient village, a practice still strictly respected by the residents. At the center of the village stands the fifteenth-century Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral on which stands a large 24-ray rose window of rare beauty. In Piazza Beato Giovanni Paolo II (Piazzetta Cattedrale), the eighteenth-century buildings of the Bishop's Palace and the old Seminary face each other, connected by the suggestive Scoppa arch. On the ground floor of the Episcopal Palace there is the Diocesan Museum, which preserves and exhibits the extraordinary historical and artistic heritage of the Ostuni Church with masterpieces of international significance.
