Situated in the interior state of Minas Gerais, Ouro Preto was the center of the Brazilian Gold Rush which began in the late 17th century and resulted in nearly 30 million ounces of the yellow metal being extracted. Situated in the Serra do Espinhaço mountains, Ouro Preto was the state capital until the founding of the city of Belo Horizonte in the late 19th century. Ouro Preto has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
