Stelvio Pass runs through the Ortler Alps, connecting the provinces of South Tyrol in the Trentino-Alto-Adigio region with Sondrio in Lombardy. It's the second-highest pass in the Alps and the highest in the eastern part of the great chain. The earliest road was built shortly after the Napoleonic Wars; the pass was the scene of heavy fighting between Italy and Austria-Hungary in World War I.

Stelvio Pass The Stelvio Pass (Italian: Passo dello Stelvio) is a mountain pass in northern Italy bordering Switzerland at an elevation of 2,757 m (9,045 ft) above sea level. It is the highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps, and the second highest in the Alps, 13 m (43 ft) below France's Col de l'Iseran (2,770 m (9,088 ft)). Rifugio Pirovano With "Pirovano Stelvio" you will experience the thrill of skiing in the summer: from June to November we offer ski courses for every level, relax, events and much more! The Stelvio Pass Glacier in Italy, at an altitude of 3,450 metres (11,320 ft), normally permits skiing year-round, but was closed to skiing for the first time in 90 years in August 2017 due to a heatwave. Monte Scorluzzo Monte Scorluzzo (3094 m) is a nice peak which raises above the Stelvio Pass on its south-west side, with a good road to the pass and a lot of free parking space. Access by car to such an altitude makes climbing to M. Scorluzzo rather easy. The summit can be reached within 2 hours.
