Rural Maramures

Maramureș is a historical and cultural region which covers a portion of northern Romania and the western Ukraine. Most of the region is covered by the mountains and foothills of the Carpathian range which runs across large sections of Eastern and Southeastern Europe. The region was part of the Kingdom of Hungary for centuries, before coming under the control of the Ottoman Empire and later the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
