The construction of the basilica was completed in 1914, on the eve of World War I, having been started nearly four decades earlier. It sits atop Montmartre hill in the 18th arrondissement. Its conception was partially tied to the wave of repentance which swept France following its defeat by Germany in the Franco Prussian War of 1870 and the ensuing civil war sparked by the Paris Commune.
