The Stone Forest of Cumbemayo, Peru

AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE : Check out this magnificent drone video from the Andes Mountains of Peru, compliments of AirVuz contributor and pilot Gabriel Ante. It's called the Cumbemayo Stone Forest, and it's a series of distinctive-looking rock formations set at an altitude of about 11.5k ft. above sea level (around 3.5k m) near the city of Cajamarca in the northern part of the country. The rock formations, some of which reach heights of up to 60 ft. (about 18 m), are called Los Frailones. Some of them appear to resemble hands and other recognizable shapes.

"Located 30 minutes from the city of Cajamarca, the stone forest belongs to the Cumbemayo Archaeological Complex. It is a vast area where multiple and varied stone figures lie known as 'frailones', because of their similarity to a procession of friars. According to research, this place served to worship water, due to the discovery of pre-Inca aqueducts dating from 1000 years B. C. Some of them remain intact to this day. The most important one reaches about one kilometer of length and is carved out of rock. According to legends, this canal transported water from the Pacific Ocean, and had an important spiritual value in relation to this natural resource."
