The fish lagoon

AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE : In this drone video by AirVuz contributor and pilot Luiz Gerbase, you'll get a bird's eye view of Brazil's Lagoa do Peixe National Park. Located in the southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul, the park was created as a temporary home for migratory birds along the estuary of the Guaiba River. The park runs for about 35 km (around 22 mi.) between two lines of sand dunes on the Atlantic Ocean coastline. It aids bird species such as the common tern, the red knot, and others on their annual journeys which extend from the USA to Patagonia.

The Lagoa do Peixe National Park was created in 1986 with the objective of protecting migratory bird species and samples from the coastal ecosystems of Rio Grande do Sul - Brasil, which depend on them for their life cycle. In 1991, it was included in the Hemispheric Reserve Network for Waders as an International Site. In 1993, it was recognized as Ramsar Site for its importance for the conservation of wetlands. The park is located on an extensive sandy coastal plain, located between Lagoa dos Patos and the Atlantic Ocean. Its landscape is composed of restinga forest, wetlands, dune fields, freshwater and brackish lagoons, as well as beaches and a marine area. Despite its name, Lagoa do Peixe is actually a lagoon, because of the communication with the sea. It is relatively shallow, with an average depth of 60 centimeters. It is 35 kilometers long and 2 kilometers wide, and is formed by a succession of small interconnected lagoons, thus characterizing a natural brackish water reservoir. The area is a nursery for the development of marine species, among them are pink shrimp, mullet and sole, in addition, it attracts various species of birds that are found in the lagoon and in its marshes abundant food.
