Hálendið - A Journey Through the Icelandic Highlands

AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE :

Prepare to be amazed by this stunning drone video of Iceland's Highlands by top AirVuz contributor haussmannvisuals.  He used a DJI Mavic Pro 2 as well as a first person view (FPV) drone to the stunning beauty of the region, which covers much of the interior of the island but which is largely inaccessible other than with off-road vehicles.  The two main locations featured in the video are Landmannalaugar, which is part of the Fjallabak Nature Reserve in south-central Iceland, and the Mælifell volcano.

About a decade ago, I visited Iceland for the first time, and since then, I've been drawn back to its enchanting highlands year after year. This unique world comes to life in late June and July, only to be covered in snow when winter returns.

It's a place of vibrant landscapes, from lush green hills to dark lava plains and a spectrum of colors in between.

Whether I'm driving or flying with the legendary pilot Haraldur Diego, I can't resist the call of the highlands. But this beauty isn't easy to access. It's hidden behind challenging roads, river crossings, and minimal facilities, except for a few remote huts and camping spots. You need a sturdy 4x4 vehicle to explore these hidden gems.

Among all the incredible spots, two hold a special place in my heart. First, there's Landmannalaugar, where I saw the Northern Lights for the first time, surrounded by glacial rivers and beautiful lakes. Then, there's the majestic Maelifjell mountain.

Every time I drive through Maelifellsandur, I'm amazed by the beauty of the area. Join me on this journey as we visit some of my favorite places in this extraordinary region.
