Nemrut Crater Lake

AirVuz contributor Truvali_17 brings us this excellent drone video of Turkey's Lake Nemrut, one of the world's largest crater lakes. It's located in the eastern province of Bitlis, just west of the (much larger) Lake Van. It sits atop Lake Nemrut, which last erupted in the 17th century and is now considered dormant. The lake has a surface area of nearly five square mi. (just over 12 square km) and is quite deep - just over 575 ft. (176 m) at its deepest point. It's recognized and legally protected as an important wetlands area.

Lake Nemrut is the second largest crater lake in the world and the largest in Turkey, and is named after Nemrut, the Babylonian ruler who lived in 2100 BC. The width of the rim of the crater formed as a result of the explosions in Nemrut is 48 km2, and the width of the bottom is 36 km2. There are a total of 5 lakes, two of which are large, within the crater area at an altitude of 2,247 m at sea level in the Nemrut caldera. Its average depth is 100 m and its deepest point is 155 m.
