Rio and Above

In 2009, Brazil erupted in celebration when Rio de Janeiro was chosen to host the 2016 Summer Olympics, making Rio the proverbial center of the world for two weeks in August 2016.  While the Games themselves were off-limits for drones, a few of those traveling to Rio for the Games brought their drones with them, like Zekedrone. In this great video, he captured Rio on the eve of the Olympics, offering an amazing perspective of an exciting time for this great city.

Sunset in Rio

Husam Adin

Contributor Hasam Adin created this gorgeous drone video of Rio de Janeiro at sunset.  Much of the footage was shot around Sugar Loaf Mountain, the improbably shaped hill in Guanabara Bay.  It's one of the top attractions in Rio, and has been a shooting location for numerous films and TV shows.  Famously, the cablecar running to the top of the mountain (which you'll see at the :30 mark) was the location for a scene in the 1977 James Bond movie Moonraker starring Roger Moore, the 12th in the series.

Rio de Janeiro on New Year's Eve, 2018

Laurent Paris

Laurent Paris created this spectacular aerial video of Rio de Janeiro on New Years Eve of 2018. Most of the footage is of the city's beaches, some of the most well known in the world.  Much of the video was shot around Copacabana Beach, a 2.5 km (about 1.5 mi.) curved arc of beach that has come to define Brazil's second largest (but best known) city.  It also includes some epic shots of central Rio, and it ends with a fireworks show on the city's great waterfront.
