A little about The Monte Sole historical regional park
AIRVŪZ STAFF NOTE :
AirVuz contributor Marco Miele brings us this excellent video of the Montel Sole Historical Regional Park in north-central Italy. The park covers over 15k acres (6.3k hectares) in the foothills of the Appenine Mountains just 25 mi. (40 km) south of Bologna in the Emilia Romagna region. The park is home to nearly a thousand plant species as well as fauna ranging from wild boar to green woodpeckers. The area was the site of an infamous massacre by occupying German troops in the Fall of 1944, in the waning months of World War II.

The Monte Sole historical regional park is a protected natural area that was established in 1989 and is located in the metropolitan city of Bologna. It extends over the territory between the Reno and Setta rivers, the scene, during the Second World War, of the terrible massacre of Monte Sole carried out by the Nazi-Fascist soldiers in 1944. The historic park of Monte Sole extends over almost the entire area involved in the massacre. The establishment of this protected area, as well as the protection and enhancement of the environmental heritage, aims to keep alive the interest and memory of this gloomy piece of Italian history, of the events of the Red Star Partisan Brigade, through the dissemination of a culture of peace aimed above all at the younger generations. The park covers an area of about 6,300 hectares included in the territory of the municipalities of Marzabotto, Monzuno and Grizzana Morandi, which united with the province of Bologna, the municipality of Bologna, the mountain communities n. 10-Upper and Middle Rhine Valley and n. 11-Five Bolognese valleys make up the park management consortium. [1] The park territory overlaps almost entirely with the Monte Sole site of community interest
