Cruising through history in some old abandoned mining camps. Gilpin County, Colorado: Once known as the "Richest Square Mile on Earth." The discovery of precious metals in this area, namely gold and silver, led to the 2nd largest "Gold Rush" in American history and prompted Western Expansion of the United States. Most of the structures in this film were built over 100 years ago, between the years of 1870-1910 and were quickly abandoned after the riches were depleted. Sadly, the remnants of these mining camps has left the area uninhabitable due to contamination from the processes and elements used to extract gold. Arsenic, Lead and Manganese are found in highly toxic levels in surrounding streams, ponds and other watersheds leaving a scattering of Ghost Towns in the pock-marked earth.
