Abano Pass, Tusheti, Georgia

Abano Pass is one of the most spectacular mountain roads in Georgia and the only road connecting Tusheti with the rest of the country. The route climbs high into the Greater Caucasus before crossing the pass and descending toward Omalo, the main village of Tusheti. Because of heavy snow and harsh mountain weather, the road is usually accessible for only about four or five months of the year, roughly from June until October.

For much of the year, snow makes the pass impossible to cross by car. Even in summer, the journey can be challenging, with a narrow unpaved road, steep slopes, sharp turns, waterfalls, loose rocks and sections exposed to landslides. Weather conditions can change quickly, and rain or falling rocks can make an already difficult road even more demanding.

But the difficulty of the journey is also part of what makes Abano Pass so unforgettable. The road winds through deep valleys, green forests and high alpine landscapes, revealing breathtaking views of the Caucasus Mountains around almost every turn. At its highest point, the route reaches roughly 2,900 meters above sea level. Beyond the pass lies the remote region of Tusheti, famous for its wild landscapes, traditional mountain villages and historic stone towers. For travelers who make the journey, the road to Tusheti is not simply a way to reach a destination — it is an adventure in its own right.
