Berdik (Poladauri) Fortress

Berdik Fortress, also known as Poladauri, is located in southern Georgia, in the Bolnisi Municipality of the Kvemo Kartli region, near the modern border with Armenia. The fortress stands on a hill above the Pernenjanchai River and once controlled an important route linking Kartli with the southern Caucasus. Berdik was built and used in the late Middle Ages, mainly between the 15th and 17th centuries, during a period of political instability and constant border conflicts. At that time, eastern Georgia was ruled by the Kingdom of Kartli. In the late 15th century, Kartli was ruled by King Constantine II, a period marked by the strengthening of southern defensive lines. In the first half of the 16th century, the kingdom was ruled by Kings Luarsab I and later Simon I, when Kvemo Kartli repeatedly became a zone of confrontation between the Ottoman Empire and the Safavid state. In the 17th century, Kartli was ruled by King Rostom, during whose reign the military importance of some border fortresses gradually declined. Berdik functioned as a defensive stronghold with a stationed garrison controlling movement through the valley. It also served as a refuge for the local population during times of military threat. The fortress architecture is purely defensive and designed for prolonged resistance. No reliable records exist of Berdik being captured by direct assault. By the 18th century, changes in borders and military strategy led to its abandonment. Today, the ruins of Berdik remain an important monument of medieval history in Kvemo Kartli.
