Kaunas is the second largest city in the Baltic Republic of Lithuania, after Vilnius. Like Vilnius, it sits not on the Baltic Sea but in the interior of the country. Kaunas was actually the capital of the country during the interwar period, when Vilnius was considered to be part of Poland. Considered the country's cultural capital, Kaunas has a population of about 300,000.
