Aerial Footage of the 30 Year Old Pyramide du Louvre

Published 06/17/2019 08:12
This year the iconic Pyramide du Louvre celebrates its 30th anniversary. This aerial video by creator JayDeeBTW shows the modern glass structure and historic museum. The pyramid was commissioned by French President François Mitterrand in 1984 during a museum expansion. The remodel was designed by Chinese-American architect, I.M. Pei, who kept the project a secret from his team for months.

When the pyramid plan was made public in 1985 it was met with controversy. French traditionalists didn't approve of the modern design of the pyramid, but soon after it opened in 1989 the sentiment changed drastically. Today the pyramid is heralded as an important French monument, updating the 226-year old museum with a distinct symbol.

The striking visual has helped the Louvre become Europe's most popular museum on social media. The museum attracts nine million visitors a year.
