AirVūz News: World of Drones 04/26/21

Published 04/26/2021 08:36

We begin with the updated part 107 and remote ID rules that officially went into effect last week. While many may be concerned about the enhanced tracking system that the authorities will have on the drones as part of the remote ID, there are also many updates that will make getting certified (or recertified) much easier than in the past. One of the main points that are part of these new rules is the free online part 107 exams, which is a huge upgrade as pilots would previously have to go to a certified location and pay $150 for the test. Another big change is that pilots who pass the test will have privileges for night operations, without having to submit for a night waiver. Possibly the most noticeable change is the Operation Over People rule. In the past flying over people or moving vehicles was highly frowned upon, no matter which type of drone was being flown,  now, after passing this new part 107 test, pilots will be able to make those flights, legally, with certain types of drones. To be able to fly over people without a waiver, the drone must be under .55 pounds, or 250g, and have guards around props. The most recognizable drone fitting that description is the mavic mini series which comes in right below that weight at 249 grams. As we see these changes as a huge step in UAV operations, many see this as just a beginning to the Remote ID process.

Next, to a drone that gets more use below sea level than high above it. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have been in the process of testing an underwater “snakelike” drone that has the capability to inspect underwater infrastructures for damage or maintenance of ships and submarines. Coined the “Hardened Underwater Modular Robot Snake”, it is said to be able to reach places that robots and other drones cannot reach. As imagined, this drone is perfect for use within the military, as not only would it save from having divers inspect ships at sea, but is said to be much more cost efficient. Also, according to the team Carnegie Mellon this drone has the adaptability to have use on land for tight spaces, or even climbing up trees for inspections.

Now, how about some drone videos of the week?? Here in no particular order are the top-5 Videos uploaded to AirVuz.com last week.

We know each time Zimy shares one of his creations on AirVuz is it going to be mind blowing, and this one was no different. Teaming up with DJI for the release of the Mavic Air 2S made for the perfect combo.
