AirVūz News: World of Drones 08/17/20

Published 08/17/2020 07:11

We begin at Fenway Park in Boston where another drone has caused a delay during a Major League Baseball game. Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays players first spotted the drone during the 4th inning of their game last Thursday, which eventually ended up causing a 4-minute delay until the drone flew away. This is the second time a drone has caused a delay in an MLB game this year. As you may have seen on last week's world of drones episode, the first instance of this happened just a couple weeks ago during a Twins-Pirates game at Target Field in Minneapolis.

A bald eagle destroys a government drone over Lake Michigan.

The $950 drone, which was a part of a Michigan state environmental agency abbreviated EGLE, was in the process of surveying an area of the lake near the state’s Upper Peninsula. Then, out of nowhere, it started spinning uncontrollably and eventually got a prop destroyed by the bald eagle leading to it falling out of the sky. “When he looked up, the drone was gone, and an eagle was flying away,” said the department of the drone pilot in a statement after the incident. They go on to speculate that the eagle could have attacked because of a territorial dispute, because it was hungry “or maybe it did not like its name being misspelled.” Julia Ponder, executive director of the Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota, said on Saturday that it was likely because the drone had encroached on the eagle’s territory.

“They’re the king of the skies,” she said.

A drone assists in an arrest of a man suspected of a domestic violence stabbing.

Last week the Santa Monica Police Department deployed their drone to locate the suspect Adam Martinez. Once spotting the drone flying over him, Martinez willingly surrendered. “When the domestic violence stabbing occurred last weekend, the supervisors working saw the opportunity to deploy the aircraft and do it in a way that is going to help minimize the risk to officers in the community and get that suspect into custody, and it worked out perfectly," said Lt. Russ Mengel with the Santa Maria Police Department.
