BETWEEN SKY AND MOUNTAINS: THE CAJAS NATIONAL PARK

El Cajas, an emporium of life and pride for the people of Cuenca city, today celebrates 21 years of National Park declaration. Many have been the administrations that has gone through the protected area, with successes and errors, however, El Cajas is still magical, full of corners with secrets that feed the soul of those who visit this paradisiacal place. Efforts are made with a group of people who have conviction for what they do, Park Rangers, Biologists and Managers gestate labor, techniques and resources to preserve the protected area and beyond it. The watersheds depend not only on the protected area to benefit from the essential "water" resource, because for this resource to reach our homes, there is a complex cycle of energy flows, which are associated from the most elementary but necessary services of the forests with its architects, the diverse species of birds, mammals and insects that pollinate, disperse seeds and prune vegetation, even the most complex eco-hydrological processes. These delicate processes have been altered by the hand of human with its multiple impacts generated in the surroundings of our Cajas Plateau, and, a new one increases the threats to continue breaking the natural cycles, I am referring to the mining activity, which is slowly enveloping the protected area with concessions, risking the connectivity of the ecosystems and possibly isolating the fauna that depends on these natural corridors. It is time to take actions that prevent us from destroying our greatest assets with their services and resources. This message is for the lives of those now and those of the future.
