Frauenkirche, Dresden

Take in this aerial view of Germany's Dresden Cathedral, compliments of DW-Travel. Situated in the heart of the Saxon state capital, it's considered one of the most beautiful churches in Europe.  The great landmark overlooks the Elbe River in the historic city center.  It was completed in the mid 18th century at the behest of the (Catholic) royal family which ruled largely Protestant Saxony.  Heavily damaged by the famous Allied bombing raid in the closing months of World War, the cathedral was later carefully restored.
