Canyon Fortaleza - Cambará do Sul The Fortaleza Canyon is the biggest of all the canyons in Brazil. Its walls are 7.5 kilometers long and, in some points, up to 900 meters high. Its name refers to the shape of the basalt cliffs, as they resemble the walls of a giant fort. The canyon is considered one of the most exuberant natural attractions in Rio Grande do Sul, bordering the state of Santa Catarina, being the upper edge of RS and the valley of SC. It's a dangerous way to cross the border... The highest point in the canyon region is 1,157 meters high and on clear days you can see the ocean and the city of Torres. Fortaleza is located in the Serra Geral National Park, 23 km from the Center of Cambará do Sul. It is part of the Serra Geral Geological Formation, which is actually not a typical mountain range, but a plateau (Meridional Plateau), with vertical walls that run together. they extend from north to south and then from east to west at the height of the city of Osório in RS, where the Borussia hill marks the southeastern limit of the plateau. The management of the Serra Geral and Aparados da Serra national parks was privatized in January 2021, with Construcap de São Paulo being the winner of the public notice. The road that leads to the park is being paved. ======= Notes: The Southern Plateau was formed by successive lava flows on the occasion of the separation of Pangea (the only continent that existed about 200 million years ago) generating the coast of Brazil and Africa. It seems like yesterday, doesn't it? After all, at this time, dinosaurs already roamed there and sailed along with the continents. The geological event that gave rise to the plateau is called the Trapp Spill and was a large volcanic basalt spill (one of the largest in the world) that occurred in the Mesozoic era, giving rise to one of the most fertile soils in Brazil (purple soil), stretching from the western portions of São Paulo to Rio Grande do Sul. I'm a little confused by this, how did the dinosaurs live with this as it all happened? I need help here... This large basalt spill has its edge exposed abruptly in a north-south direction. With their fissures and erosion they form canyons, rich in waterfalls and Atlantic forest, a paradise for mountaineers. In the East-West direction, from the city of Osório, the plateau slides in a slightly milder way and shelters the cities of the Rio Grande do Sul mountain range on the high edge and below the Rio dos Sinos basin, among others.
