Protected Area is the teritory with special status that aims to protect the physical characteristics of the territory, biodiversity and cultural heritage. The protected area includes state reserves, national parks, nature monuments and etc... Protected areas in Georgia have more than 100 year history. The first protected area – Lagodekhi Strict Nature Reserve was created in 1912. Over the years, the size and number of Protected Areas increased. Today, there are 88 Protected Areas and their total area is 596 156 ha, which is 8.57 % of the country’s territory. Donation most welcome :)
