Grand Imperial Mosque of Sultan Abdülmecid on Bosphorus

The Grand Imperial Mosque of Sultan Abdülmecid (the Büyük Mecidiye Camii) was built on the orders of the Ottoman ruler Abdulmejid I and completed in 1856, on the site of an earlier mosque which was destroyed in an uprising . The mosque is situated in the Ortaköy neighborhood on the Bosphorus Strait, one of the most visited areas of the bustling city.

Ortakoy Mosque also known as Grand Imperial Mosque (Buyuk Mecidiye Camii in Turkish) is located right on the edge of Bosphorus. This Neo-Baroque style mosque was built in 1853 for Ottoman Sultan Abdulmecit. Its architect Nigogos Balyan was also the architect of the Dolmabahce Palace.
