The church documented for its consecration in the year 889, was replaced by another of Lombard architecture, dating from the first half of the 11th century. Later reforms were made, during the 17th and 18th centuries, adding side chapels, a bell tower and the Renaissance portal. The cult was maintained until the 18th century, when it was moved to the church of Santa Maria del Barri, also known as the Hermitage of Lurdes. In some archaeological excavations carried out in 1943, remains of the old church from the 9th century were found, anthropomorphic tombs, coins and a pre-Romanesque capital, which are preserved in the Tona museum.
