On the west side of Phuket Island, going south from Patong Beach just past Karon and Kata Yai Beach is a smaller and quite lovely beach, Kata Noi Beach. Noi is small in Thai, and Yai is big. This is the smaller beach of Kata, and it’s even more beautiful. At the base of rolling hills and between rocky crags, Kata Noi Beach is in an ideal location. The beach faces due west and benefits from the amazing sunsets Phuket is famous for. Kata Noi Beach can also get its share of great waves during the months of May to October, when Thailand’s ‘low-season’ is in effect. When waves are high, do be careful to avoid the water because the riptides are strong, and have been deadly in the past. The sand at Kata Noi is soft and generally clean. The water is blue-green and there are usually some soft waves – ideal for children or grown-ups. There are some submerged rocks and coral bits, but not many, and you will enjoy swimming here. The water is clear and you can usually see under the water to see obstacles. For those of you intent on sleeping the day away in the comfort of a lounge chair with umbrella – you’re in luck, Kata Noi has them. For those of you looking to do something more exciting, the snorkeling is excellent along Kata Noi’s south end close to the rocks where there is also a lot of coral. There are many varieties of colorful fish to gawk at. Bring your underwater camera if you’ve got one! Kata Noi is well-known as a great surfer’s beach when the waves are big. If you are here during the off-season, drive by and see if you can see anyone surfing!
