The fortress city of Kotor is located in the northwest of Montenegro, in the immediate vicinity of the Croatian Dubrovnik, in the southeastern part of the Bay of Kotor, at the foot of the Lovćen mountain range. Boka-Kotor Bay (Boka Kotorska, in Italian Boche di Cattaro), one of the deepest parts of the Adriatic Sea. It consists of several small bays, interconnected by narrow exits from the bay, which together form one of the best natural harbors in Europe. Due to the unique mixture of different cultures, the Old Town of Kotor and the Fortress have been included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. Here you will find traces of different eras: Renaissance, Gothic, and Baroque.Kotor Fortress is a great example of a medieval fortification, which includes: the main, massive ramparts up to 16 meters wide, 20 meters high and 4.5 km long, which surrounds the Old Town of Kotor and goes to the top of the hill; stone staircase leading to the bastion of St. Rocco and the Church of Our Lady of Health; The highest point in Kotor - the fortress of St. John (bastione di San Giovanni - "Illyrian fortress") on the top of the mountain. The ramparts were built around the Old Town of Kotor from the 9th to the 19th century, so that the fortification protects the city from attacks from both the sea and the land. The main part of the walls surrounding the city was built in the 13th-14th century, when Kotor (Cataro) was the stronghold of the Venetian Republic in southern Dalmatia. Considering that most of the time of the rule of the Venetian Republic, Kotor and Boka Kotorska were the place of struggle with the Ottoman Empire (his rule was a few hours from the city walls), this period can be called the most dramatic in the history of the city.
