It is the largest mountain massif in the Alps, the second for height after Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Switzerland, Piedmont and the second highest in Italy, as well as the one with the highest average altitude (9 of the first 20 highest peaks of the Alpine chain), located in the sector of the North-Western Alps (section of the Pennine Alps) along the watershed border between Italy (on the border between Aosta Valley and south-east of the Mischabel Massif, giving its name to the supergroup of the Monte Rosa Alps, composed of several important groups and subgroups.
