The historic island is perhaps most closely associated with the long-prohibited practice of whaling. At its peak, Nantucket was the center of the industry, which for a time played an important role in the New England economy. Famously, Nantucket is featured in Herman Melville's 1951 novel Moby-Dick, widely considered to be one of the greatest works of American literature.
