Nazaré is a Portuguese village in the district of Leiria. The Municipality of Nazaré has an area of 82.43 km² and about 14,885 inhabitants. Currently, the great attraction of this village, in addition to the gastronomy specialized in fish and seafood, are the waves and surfing, thanks to the "Nazaré Canyon", an underwater geomorphological phenomenon that allows the formation of giant and perfect waves. It is the largest submerged gorge in Europe, about 170 kilometres along the coast, which is up to 5000 metres deep. Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara gave it worldwide visibility when, in 2011, he made the world's largest wave on a sandy bottom, about 30 meters, at Praia do Norte, winning the Billabong XXL Global BigWave Awards and breaking a Guinness Book record. Like him, surfers from all over the world visit Nazaré every year to venture into the sea, especially during the winter. Nazaré beach is truly a special place, full of history and natural beauty. I loved reading about the fishing traditions and vibrant culture of the area. And the giant waves are legendary! It must be amazing to witness the Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge. You have to visit Nazaré one of these days! Nazaré beach, with a mild climate and natural beauty, has one of the oldest traditions in Portugal linked to the fishing arts.
