KALLMÜNZ CASTLE The ruins of a Gothic hill castle rise high above Kallmünz. The curtain wall, the round keep and the walls of the three-storey great hall with the window arcades stand out in the landscape, even from far away. When you reach the plateau, you can enter the castle ruins through the preserved gate system. The castle dominated the Naab Valley for almost three centuries, before it was destroyed and abandoned in 1641. Even in the stone, bronze and iron age, people lived in this strategically favourable location. The plateau provided protection from attackers due to its steep rock faces. There have also been important paths at the confluence of the Naab and Vils since prehistoric times. Ramparts from prehistoric and early historical periods which – at least at first glance – are hidden amongst forest, meadows and fields today testify to early fortifications of the high plateau, long before the castle was built in 13th century. PICTURESQUE KALLMÜNZ Two rivers, the Naab and the Vils, shape the three-part structure of Markt Kallmünz. The inner market town nestles into the foot of the Schlossberg, the Am Planl buildings are located on the former Naab Island, the outer market town is located on the other side of the Naab. A small market square emerged in the inner market town in front of the town hall, which was built in 1603, and the baroque parish church. This actual centre of the town is characterised by its handsome buildings. The historic fabric of the buildings from the 16th - 18th centuries has also been unusually well preserved in the Am Planl buildings and in the outer market town. The picturesque market town, which attracts tourists with its medieval character, also cast a spell over Wassily Kandinsky. A number of his paintings were created there in 1903.
