Pilgrimage Church of Maria-Hilf in Speiden with Chapel of Mercy In the hilly landscape of the Allgäu Alps, Speiden lies with its widely famous Chapel of Mercy and pilgrimage church Maria-Hilf. The origin of the pilgrimage goes back to an event from the Thirty Years' War. Christian Steinacher, manager of the high Freiberg Sölde in Speiden, accommodated three riders of the Schlick regulations. After her plague death, Steinacher learned of the mercy of the soldiers towards his daughter and placed a shrine of the Blessed Mother as a helper in need at her grave. A short time later, in 1635/36 he built a chapel in the same place. The first answer to the prayer already occurred when the chapel was built. A severely disabled woman was healed. In the following 20 years, 156 miracles were recorded in the "Miracel Book" in Zell. Many hearings and healings have been attested to this day. The small chapel of grace quickly became too small and so the construction of the pilgrimage church began next door in 1644. Several conversions and refurbishments up to 1783 shaped the look, which was restored in 1966-69, of the Maria Hilfer pilgrimage church, which is known today. The image of grace of the Mother of God, which probably dates back to 1520, has been in the chapel again since the renovation in 1966.
