…It seems that in the past, there was a custom of dedicating sculptures to animals to recognize their sacrifice during the construction of works of art, so much so that among the marble decorations of the Florentine Cathedral we find other anthropomorphic or feral gargoyles. According to tradition, the statue could therefore be one of the builders’ tributes to the various draught animals used to transport the materials needed to build the Cathedral. However, there is another, more curious and playful version: the legend of a betrayal and the lover’s original revenge….
