It is a fairly widespread opinion that the castle was built at the behest of Count Ugolino Della Gherardesca, who effectively became the owner of the fort after 1257, following the partition of the Giudicato of Cagliari. The castle, however, dates back to an earlier era, having already been mentioned in a papal bull of 1215 and would have arisen at the initiative of the marquises of Massa, the last judges of Cagliari. In medieval documents it is also attested the existence of a village of Aquafredda, located in the plain below [1]. After the death of Count Ugolino the castle passed first to Pisa and then in 1324, after the Aragonese conquest of Pisan Sardinia, to the Aragonese to be then abandoned probably starting from 1410. Subsequently it passed to various Sardinian feudal lords until it was redeemed by the king of Sardinia Vittorio Amedeo III of Savoy in 1785
