After weeks of rain we're finally getting some nice weather! I've been testing the Gemfan 5152 props over the last week or so since the sun came out, and I have to say I'm surprised and impressed. The design makes almost no aerodynamic sense to me. Increasing the angle of attack at the tips where the speed of the props is the highest is a very odd design decision. In static tests this gives some very weird results, but somehow unloaded it seems to work. These props have a meaty low end and strong mid throttle response while still keep excellent speed on the top end. Transition speeds are quite good, on par with many of the other higher pitch, high advance ratio props on the market. Efficiency at full throttle and in high angle of attack is down a bit (those tips again!) but the overall efficiency of the props are not bad. This is a compilation of a few days of flying these from this week. The thing I noticed the most was the low and mid throttle precision and control that they gave me. Coming straight from the Cyclone 5046 the difference at low and low-mid throttle was noticeable, and the speed was about the same at higher throttle without noticeable increases in sagging. My flight times actually increased by about 10-15 seconds, which is likely due to the increased control at lower throttle that allowed me to stay off the higher throttle. Overall quite impressive, and an excellent freestyle prop. My only complaint is they tend to bend easily. You can see some jello in the last bits of the video after flying on some slightly abused props from a brief encounter with a tree.
Also, I am sorry for the monotony of the locations I have access to. I haven't had a chance to get to any new locations. I have one in mind I'm hoping to hit soon, but with as busy as life is right now I just fly where I can. :( Feel free to skip the video if you're bored of seeing the same 5 trees :D
