Steingletscher, located in the Susten Pass region of the canton of Bern, is one of the most impressive glacial landscapes in the Swiss Alps. Surrounded by towering rock faces and high mountain peaks, this glacier creates a dramatic and rugged setting where ice and rock combine to form a truly alpine landscape. Its crevasses, shifting shapes and rocky deposits reflect the ongoing evolution of the terrain and highlight the vulnerability of these environments to climate change. Above the glacier stands the Tierberglihütte, an alpine mountain hut situated at approximately 2,795 metres above sea level. It is an important base for experienced hikers and mountaineers exploring the surrounding peaks. The approach leads through a high-altitude environment of rocky slopes, glacial moraines and spectacular mountain scenery. From the hut and its surroundings, visitors can enjoy impressive views across the glacier and the summits rising above the Susten Pass, experiencing the quiet and remoteness of the high Alps. One of the most prominent mountains in the area is Sustenhorn, which reaches an elevation of 3,502 metres. Its imposing summit dominates the landscape and is a popular objective for mountaineers, particularly during the season suitable for glacier ascents. Reaching the summit requires experience, proper preparation and careful attention to snow and ice conditions, as the route crosses genuine high-alpine terrain.
