THE UPPER NANGARITZA: DEVELOPING THE MÚRA NÚNGKA (TEPUY)

One of the most impressive geographical points of the upper Amazon basin is the Nangaritza valley, whose etymology comes from the Shuar words "Nankámke" = the beginning, and "Etsáa" = Sun; The beginning of the Sun, or the birth of the Sun. Located in the southeast of Ecuador in the province of Zamora Chinchipe, this valley is characterized by its geological history, because in the late Miocene was part of the Caribbean Sea, which generated the evolution of new species of fauna and flora and left as a heritage carved Karst rocks that today became in one of the largest and least explored galleries in the world of speleology. The "Múra Núngka", also called Tepuyes in allusion to the similarity with the geomorphological formations of Venezuela, are rocky plateaus carved by the erosion of the limestone rocks that gave a set of singular mountains of flat summits and vertical walls of some hundreds of meters of height. The word Múra Núngka comes from the Shuar language and means "Top of the Earth", because according to the worldview of the Shuar ethnicity, from its summits you can see our entire World. Rich in biodiversity and with landscapes that are a book open to prehistory, Nangaritza is a natural treasure of Ecuador, which unfortunately is already invaded by mining operations that threaten the future and health of this emporium of life in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
