Malacca is a city in southern Malaysia. It's situated on the eponymously named strait, and is the capital of the State of Malacca. While the city is now only a fraction of the size of Kuala Lampur (which lies to its south), Malacca is the far older of the two cities. It was the center of Portuguese and later Dutch rule of much of Southeast Asia, and at one time was one of the most important port cities in all of Asia.
