The Town Built on a Rock - Nessebar, Bulgaria

Fly over Nessebar, Bulgaria in 4K - a 3,000-year-old town on a rocky peninsula in the Black Sea, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This cinematic drone flight traces the shoreline and the old wooden windmill on the narrow isthmus, drifts above the terracotta rooftops and timber houses of the Old Town, and climbs out over open water as the sun drops toward the horizon.

Barely 850 metres long and joined to the mainland by a strip of road you could walk in a few minutes, Nessebar has been settled for more than three thousand years - first by Thracians, then as the Greek colony of Mesembria, then Roman, Byzantine and Bulgarian in turn. The dark timber houses that lean out over its lanes are Bulgarian National Revival, stone below and wood above, and the whole peninsula has been under UNESCO protection since 1983. From the air the shape of it finally makes sense: a small rock in the sea that people have refused to leave for thirty centuries.
