Covering most of the Tibetan Plateau, Tibet is the highest major region on earth, with an average elevation of about 14k ft. above sea level (around 4.4k m). Due to the runoff from the massive mountains which surround the plateau (including Mt. Everest), Tibet is one of the world's major sources of freshwater, serving as the source for most of China's major rivers.
