Trift Bridge (Bern, Switzerland)

The Trift Bridge, known in German as Triftbrücke, is one of the most spectacular suspension bridges in Switzerland. Located in the Susten Pass region of the canton of Bern, it stretches for approximately 170 metres across a dramatic mountain gorge, around 100 metres above the ground. Crossing the bridge is an unforgettable experience, offering the sensation of walking between sky and mountains amid towering rock faces, waterfalls and breathtaking alpine scenery. The bridge lies in the region of the Trift Glacier, which has retreated considerably over recent decades. As the ice withdrew, a safe crossing was needed to reach the other side of the valley. Today, the Trift Bridge has become a popular destination for hikers and a striking reminder of the changes affecting the Alpine environment. Reaching the bridge involves a mountain hike through forested areas, rocky slopes and increasingly dramatic landscapes. From the bridge, visitors can look down into the deep gorge and admire the surrounding peaks, as well as the terrain shaped by glacial activity. The hike requires a good level of fitness, sure footing and careful attention to weather conditions.
