Zakynthos Shipwreck, or "Panagiotis", is a shipwreck on the secluded coast of St. George of Zakynthos, and today is one of the most interesting sights on the island. The vessel was discovered on 5 October 1980 by a patrol boat of the Maritime Economic Police and was found to be carrying cigarette smuggling. The value of about 2,000 boxes of cigarettes was estimated at 30 million drachmas. The crew claimed that after three days the ship was stranded between Cape Kefalonia and Zakynthos due to bad weather conditions, and because of a mechanical breakdown they struck the Cape Schinari. They stayed in a cave for two days and then found refuge in the village of Volimes. [1] Until then, the coast was called St. George, and is now widely known simply as "Shipwreck". The beach is inaccessible and can only be reached by sea or air. At first the residents were alarmed by the environmental catastrophe they believed would create this boat with its cargo, and by extension the island's tourism. But shortly thereafter it became an attraction for domestic and non-tourist tourists, and it ranks among the most beautiful beaches in Greece and in the world. History of the ship.
