Here’s a brief summary of each notable Brisbane bridge :-

1. Kurilpa Bridge Opened in 2009, this award-winning pedestrian and cycle bridge spans the Brisbane River between Kurilpa Point (South Brisbane) and Tank Street (CBD). Designed with a tensegrity structure (a blend of tension and integrity), it’s one of the world’s largest hybrid tensegrity bridges, offering striking modern architecture and sustainable lighting.

2. Victoria Bridge Linking South Brisbane to the CBD, the current Victoria Bridge opened in 1969, replacing earlier versions dating back to 1865. It carries buses, cyclists, and pedestrians, and is a key public transport corridor. Notable for its central location near QPAC and the Cultural Centre.

3. William Jolly Bridge Opened in 1932 (originally named Grey Street Bridge), this Art Deco-style bridge connects North Quay to South Brisbane. Known for its distinctive “rainbow arch” design, it was Brisbane’s first major traffic bridge across the river and remains an iconic heritage-listed structure.

4. Go Between Bridge Opened in 2010, this bridge connects Milton to South Brisbane, easing inner-city traffic. Named after the 1980s Brisbane band “The Go-Betweens” via public vote, it features sleek modern design, LED lighting, and dedicated bus and cycle lanes.

5. Neville Bonner Bridge Opened in 2024, this new pedestrian and cycle bridge links the Queen’s Wharf precinct to South Bank. Named after Queensland’s first Aboriginal Senator, it enhances connectivity between key entertainment and cultural zones with a sculptural, curved design.

6. Goodwill Bridge Opened in 2001, this pedestrian and cycle bridge arcs gracefully from Gardens Point (near QUT and City Botanic Gardens) to the South Bank Parklands. Designed to foster “goodwill” between communities, it’s a vital non-motorized river crossing near major universities and cultural venues.

7. Captain Cook Bridge Completed in 1972, this major motorway bridge carries the Pacific Motorway across the river between Gardens Point and Woolloongabba. Named after explorer James Cook, it features twin concrete box-girder spans and is one of Brisbane’s busiest traffic arteries.

8. Kangaroo Point Bridge Opened in late 2024, this cable-stayed pedestrian and cycle bridge connects Kangaroo Point Cliffs to the CBD (near Alice Street). Designed to improve active transport links, it offers panoramic river views and reduces reliance on ferries or long detours for walkers and cyclists.

9. Story Bridge Opened in 1940, this iconic steel cantilever bridge spans from Fortitude Valley to Kangaroo Point. Named after John Douglas Story, a public servant, it’s one of only a few bridges of its type in Australia. Famous for its night illuminations and Bridge Climb adventure tourism.

Each bridge serves distinct transport, cultural, or aesthetic roles, collectively shaping Brisbane’s riverine urban landscape.
