The Ferrol Estuary is located in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, in the Rías Altas, in the province of La Coruña, Galicia, Spain. Its configuration offers privileged protection and magnificent conditions for marine life, providing perfect shelter from the prevailing winds and storms.Beginning in the 16th century, the excellent natural conditions of the Ferrol Estuary attracted the attention of the Crown, and its estuary and port became the landing, anchoring, and departure point for the Royal Navy. Construction began on the estuary's defensive fortifications, including the Castles of San Felipe, San Martín, and La Palma, in addition to other smaller defensive enclaves. This was a result of the Bourbon monarchy's decision to make it the capital of the Northern Maritime Department in 1726, due to the estuary's excellent security. Beginning in 1749, during the reign of Ferdinand VI, the creation of the shipyards and the Military Arsenal, which had a capacity of up to one hundred ships, and the construction of a modern city brought with it a massive influx of workers to undertake the important works, quickly making Ferrol the most populated city in Galicia. The long, narrow entrance channel to the estuary is easily defensible, which is why three important defensive castles were built, two of which are still preserved today (San Felipe Castle and La Palma Castle). There were also small defensive batteries and fortifications located at strategic points, such as the San Cristobal Battery, Viñas, San Carlos, and so on. All these military constructions turned the Ferrol Estuary into an impregnable fortress, as was clearly demonstrated by how rarely it was attacked throughout history, and when it was, the invaders suffered a resounding defeat (English attack on Ferrol, 1800).
