Vardzia is one of the most remarkable monuments of medieval Georgia. This vast cave city was carved into the slopes of Mount Erusheti during the 12th century under King George III and his daughter, the legendary Queen Tamar. The complex once contained hundreds of chambers, including living quarters, storage rooms, wine cellars, chapels, and secret passages. Historians believe that thousands of people could have lived here. Vardzia served not only as a monastery but also as a powerful fortress protecting the southern borders of the Georgian Kingdom. In the 13th century, a major earthquake exposed much of the hidden city by tearing away part of the cliff face. Today, visitors can explore a multi-level labyrinth of caves, ancient stairways, and the Church of the Dormition with its unique medieval frescoes. Overlooking the Mtkvari River valley, Vardzia combines breathtaking scenery with a fascinating history. It is widely regarded as one of Georgia’s most iconic landmarks and a must-see destination for history and travel enthusiasts.
