Located in its namesake town in Somerset, one of the counties of South West England, the original structure was built as a Catholic church in the late 1100's, centuries before England's conversion to Protestantism. It is sometimes considered the first fully Gothic design, representing a complete break with the Romanesque architecture which had previously been dominant.
