While many people associate the island nation of Taiwan with its capital Taipei, the country is actually quite large in terms of land area - over 36k square km (14k square mi), only a small portion of which is part of metropolitan Tapei or the other Taiwanese cities.  In this video, contributor NAVA used a DJI Phantom 4 Professional drone to give us an aerial tour of the island, including some relatively unknown yet spectacular spots far from the skyscrapers of Taipei.

Taipei Flight to start my vacation!

Taipei sits at the northern end of Taiwan, serving as the country's capital and largest city.  Located near the northern end of this island in the South China Sea, the city is teeming with skyscrapers, making it one of the most impressive skylines in the world.  Its most recognizable landmark is the Tapei 101 Tower, which has a roof height of 450 meters (about 1.5k ft).  Contributor Sukoon2fly vacationed in Taiwan and created this stunning aerial video of the island city.

Taichung is a municipality in the western part of central Taiwan.  The city is the second largest on the island, after the capital Taipei.  The city is not as old as Tainan (to its south), and benefited from Japanese investment during the 50 years following the Sino-Chinese War of 1895 when the island was ruled by Japan.  In this video, contributor Will Fly used a drone to film a spectacular English manor which was built into the hillside of the area during colonial times.

Taiwan is an incredibly diverse island country.  It is a place of large cities such as Taipei, Tainan, and Taichung, which boast gleaming skylines and some of the world's tallest skyscrapers.  Yet, at the same time, it's also a land of stunning mountains, pristine beaches, and centuries-old temples and pagodas.  Contributor Thibfromabove spent three weeks on Taiwan and with this video takes us on a a whirlwhind areal tour of modern and ancient Taiwan.

Just east of the southern coast of Taiwan lies Orchid Island.   The island covers about 45 square lm (around 17 square mi.).  What makes Orchid Island most unusual is its native inhabitants, the Tao, who came to the island from the Philippines across the Luzon Strait in the 13th century.  The small island is almost entirely mountainous, with peaks as high as 400 meters (1.3k ft).  Contributor Jakublin used a drone to create a stunning aerial video of this small but spectacular rock of an island.

Contributor RoamwithJohn used a drone to create this aerial video of the area around Jiufen, a mountainous area of northern Taiwan.  Jiufen is home to some of the oldest gold mining operations in east Asia, dating to the 15th century.  Unfortunately, one of the legacies of the mining activity is the contamination of the water which flows over Jiufen Falls (the "Golden Falls"), one of the most well known waterfalls in Taiwan, which is also shown in the video.

Contributor BestdayEver brightened our day with this amazing drone video of a famous rock formation on the island nation of Taiwan.  The Shen’ao Elephant Trunk Rock is situated on the coast of the Ruifang District of New Tapei City, the administrative area which covers much of northern Taiwan.  As you can see from the video, the name of the rock is quite appropriate - it really does resemble an elephant's trunk.  The rock and nearby fishing village lie beneath Mt. Shen'ao.

Taroko Canyon is one of the best known natural sites in Taiwan.  It lies in a national park which sits in several counties in the west-central part of the island.  It is sometimes referred to as Marble Gorge, in reference to the large supply of marble in the area.  The area was originally designated as a national park by occupying Japan in the 1930's; when the island was taken over by the Chinese Nationalists in the late 1940's the park status was abolished, and subsequently reinstated in the 1980's.

JrisYangFPV created this amazing first person view (FPV) video of one of the world's highest waterfalls.  It's the Jiao Lung Waterfall, and it runs down a cliff near the town of Alishan in Chiayi County, which is in the western part of the island.  It's a plunge-type waterfall with a drop of about 600 meters, or around 2k ft.  The waterfall is seasonal, and (as you might expect) flows heaviest during the monsoon season.  It's not easy to reach, so one can imagine the skill it takes to take it on with a racing drone!

Shot in Taitung, a city on the southeast coast of Taiwan, pilot bitostudio wanted to bring us a look at the world through the eye of a primitive hunter that observes creatures around it. It’s an interesting and excellent take.
